The reclamation policy of the Nguyen lords in Cochinchina (1558 -1777)

Abstract

During more than 200 years of existence, the Nguyen Lords had gained many outstanding achievements, including the remarkable process of reclaiming expanded territory. Thank to management and exploitation policies which are suitable to each region, each land type and each historical period, the Nguyen Lords encouraged all people of all classes to participate in the reclamation process. Participating in the reclamation process, not only Kinh, Cham, and Khmer ethnic groups, but also Chinese forces were mobilized. Along with the reclamation process is the process of settlement and cross-cultural intercourse, creating a dynamic, opened and diversified economy in Dang Trong (Cochinchina).
