Abstract
Using secondary data, the paper analyzes the situation of economic development in the Central Vietnam key economic region (CVKER) on several dimensions: economic growth, economic structure, budget balance, labor productivity and efficiency of investment. The results indicate that the size of the regional economy, per capita income, and the ratio of CVKER’s GDP in Vietnam’s GDP remain low. In particular, many provinces in the region still experience budget deficit. Therefore, the motivational role and the leading function of CVKER for the overall development of Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands are still very weak. Finally, the paper proposes solutions to develop the CVKER in the current context.
