APPLYING GIS IN MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN BINH THO WARD, THU DUC DISTRICT, HO CHI MINH CITY

Abstract

Viet Nam in particular and developing countries in the world in general have many pollution problems, in which waste pollution, especially municipal solid waste is becoming a concern. This study was carried out through understainding the socio-economic situation, surveying and assessing the status of domestic waste collectors and transporters through 150 questionnaires of 4 quarters in Binh Tho ward, Thu Duc district, Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, this study applies GIS tools for the purpose of managing and proposing optimal solutions to reduce environmental pollution in the area. The process of building the data was based on monitoring, gathering opinions from local people, collectors, transporters, managers of four streets in the ward. As a result, 4 types of maps including points, areas, transportation, distribution of public trash and waste management have been constructed. The study also proposed adding new public trash locations and developing a domestic waste collection route that would be better suited to the current situation.
