HUBT English majors’ pronunciation ability: problems and solutions

Abstract

This research paper uses both quantitative and qualitative data obtained from a survey of 243 HUBT English majors, the analysis results of the recordings of speaking exercises of 152 third-year students randomly selected from a group of 243 students, and the results of the test on the ability to recognize correct pronunciations of 152 students chosen from round two. The paper uses the data processing software SPSS IBM 20. The set of criteria to evaluate the pronunciation ability of English learners based on the research by Roach, P. (1991), Dalton, C.
(1994), and Hewings, M. (2007) and a test to assess the ability to recognize correct pronunciations inherited from the pronunciation practice textbook by Mark Hancock (2003) to determine common pronunciation mistakes of HUBT English majors. The research recorded four groups of common errors that HUBT English Language majors students often make, and offered some solutions to help the students overcome obstacles in English pronunciation and improve their pronunciation ability.
