Abstract

Pollution of the aqueous environment is increasing rapidly, thus, finding
effective solutions to solve this problem is very important. Among the cheap and
available adsorbent materials, sugarcane bassage and its modified forms have
confirmed in its effectiveness in the removal of dyes in aqueous medium. In this
study, sugarcane bassage was modified with hydrochloric acid (HCl), sodium
dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) before using for
methylene blue adsorption in an aqueous solution. The obtained results show that
the removal percentage of methylene blue by using sugarcane bassage modified
with HCl/SDS/EDTA could achieve the value higher than 95% when using. The
modified sugarcane bassage can be applied for adsorption of methylene blue or
other dyes in aqueous medium on a large scale.
