Abstract

In this study, pyrolusite ore was simply modified by NaOH, HCl solutions and
at 500
o
C for 2h. The modified pyrolusite sample has a small, fairly uniform
particle size and an improved surface area (25m2
/g). Modified pyrolusite sample
were applied to adsorb Pb2+
and Cd2+
ions with the maximum adsorption
capacity of 41.84mg/g Pb(II) and 69.93mg/g Cd(II). The pH values and reaction
times that directly affect the removal performance of heavy metal ions were
investigated. Under optimal conditions (metal ion concentration 20mg/L and pH
of 5), pyrolusite samples can remove up to 82.26% and 67.87% of Pb(II), Cd(II)
metal ions, respectively. The isothermal adsorption process of Pb(II) and Cd(II)
ions on modified pyrolusite follows the Langmuir model.
