Abstract

Wind turbines are often struck by lightning due to their installation in empty
areas and high altitudes, so lightning strikes disrupt power generation. When the
wind turbines are struck by lightning, the lightning current flows in the lightning
discharge conductors to the ground, in the process of propagation, it will be
induced to the power lines and control wires causing overvoltage. To protect for
wind turbines often install surge arresters. The models of surge arrester in the
overvoltage research are mainly focused on the transmission grid, but there are no
detailed studies on the protection of the overvoltage in the wind farm. This paper
presents a simple surge arrester model that does not depend on frequency and the
model of Pinceti and colleagues’ frequency dependent model to study and evaluate
overvoltage levels in wind power farms when wind turbine struck by lightning. The
obtained results are the basis for selecting a suitable surge arrester model in the
overvoltage study when lightning strikes the wind turbine. Use EMTP/ATP
electromagnetic transient program for simulation and analysis.
