SIMULATION AND COMPARISON OF STATCOM AND SVC IN THE STABILITY OF GRID-CONNECTED WINDFARM

Abstract

This paper studies the stability of grid-connected wind farm and operation
of SVC (Static Var Compensator) and STATCOM (Static synchronous Compensator)
system for wind farm integration. Wind farm models equipped with either SVC
or STATCOM are developed and simulated for some typical cases by considering
current Vietnam grid codes for wind farm integration. It is shown that both SVC
and STATCOM considerably improve the system stability during and after
disturbances. Compared to SVC, STATCOM shows a better dynamic performance
and provides a better reactive power support to the grid.
