Abstract

This paper presents a study on the trend of changing economic, technical and
emission characteristics of a research diesel engine when using biodiesel fuel with
increasing blending ratio. The study is performed by simulating AVL-5402 single
cylinder diesel engine on AVL-Boost software. The simulated fuels include fossil
diesel and biodiesel mixed with the substitution rate from 0% to 50% including B0,
B10, B20, B30, B40, B50 respectively. Simulation mode at 1400 (rpm) corresponds
to the maximum torque value, where the engine load is changed by 25%, 50% and
75% respectively. Evaluated parameters such as combustion characteristics, power,
fuel consumption and emissions are based on the ratio of the biodiesel blend. The
results show that there is a certain correlation of the biodiesel blend ratio with the
output parameters of the engine. Specifically, the biodiesel mixture ratio increases,
peak pressure and peak temperature increase, on the other hand, engine power
tends to decrease and fuel consumption increases. CO and soot emissions
decreased, while NOx increased.
