Abstract

On the transmission grid, failures caused by lightning are still one of the main causes of
power supply interruption. Therefore, research on insulator chains, an element to limit lightning
incidents on transmission grids, is being strongly developed. Two research directions in this field
are insulating materials and calculation methods of electrical fields on insulating surfaces. For
insulating materials, the requirements are high insulating ability, good mechanical properties,
and especially surface dust resistance. The second direction is the development of computational
tools, and calculation methods, which allows scientists to determine and optimize the structure
of the insulating element. The article refers to the study of numerical calculation solutions using
the finite element method in studying the discharge capacity of the transmission grid insulator
chains. Some results are carried on in the case of 220kV Vietnamese transmission lines.
