Abstract

S10C-M steel is a special steel, which is alloyed by micro-alloying
elements. This steel, having low content of carbon and very low
content of phosphorus, sulfur and others non-metalic impurities, is
used for cartridge cases of fast shot ammunition forming instead of
copper alloys. This paper deals with research on the manufacturing of
this steels from MIREX sponge iron and on the refining it in a
vacuum induction furnace, followed by forging and special heat
treatment. The heat treated-steel, having high strength and ductility
and being used for cartridge cases forming, satisfies requirements of
deep stamping and is equivalent to imported steel. The results are
obtained thanks to steelmaking process with denaturing elements,
adding of micro-alloying elements and reducing phosphorus, sulfur to
generate a high strength and good ductility
