Abstract

The worm mechanical parts and component are required to the remanufacturing system
present uncontrolled variabilities in break conditions as the complex shapes and structures.
Using the aid of reverse engineering (RE) technology, the worn part specially is quick and
accurate accomplishment of the damaged regions. Thereby, RE facilitates remanufacturing
operations to generate the parts with the like-new conditions. In this work, we propose a
reverse engineering-based solution to reproduce the worm/broken mechanical part. Firstly,
a model of point cloud data of real objects acquires by using the laser scanner. Secondly,
the point cloud data would be processed by the combination of features as noise filter,
feature extraction and simplification, which aim at reconstruction of nominal 3D CAD
geometric model to improve the reliability. Finally, this model would serve the CAM
software with input to generate the G-code program of machining process which is
efficient for re-manufacturing object. Experimental results based on worm screw shaft of
rotary-screw compressor demonstrate for using 93.26%-point cloud data effective to
obtain the geometric accuracy of 50 (µm) of the model reconstruction. The product exactly
is re-manufacturable based on 3D CAD model of reverse engineering.
