ISOLATION OF TWO TETRAOXYGENATED XANTHONES FROM DICHLOROMETHANE EXTRACT OF GARCINIA COWA LATEX AND STUDY THEIR IN VITRO CYTOTOXICITY ON SOME HUMAN CANCER CELL LINES
Abstract
From the dichloromethane extract of the Garcinia cowa Roxb. ex Choisy latex collected in Phu Quoc - Kien Giang, we have isolated two tetraoxygenated xanthones (1-2), namely 7-O-methylgarcinone E (1) and cowaxanthone (2). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by analysis of their spectroscopic data, especially by 1D and 2D NMR as well as comparison with reported compounds in the literature. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the two xanthones has been investigated against three cancer cell lines, namely Hep-G2 (liver cancer), LU-1 (lung cancer) and RD (rhabdomyosarcoma). The study revealed good cytotoxic activities of the two xanthones against all three cancer cell lines, in which cytotoxicity was better expressed on Hep-G2 cell line with IC50 values of 0.528 and 0.534 µg/ml for 1 and 2, respectively.
