THE ROLE OF THE PEOPLE IN CAN VUONG MOVEMENT IN QUANG BINH IN THE SECOND HALF OF NINETEENTH CENTURY

Abstract

After the event of French colonialism shot to invade Danang’s estuary (1858), there have been a series of efforts of Nguyen dynasty to resist the invasion of the French. While a part of the court turned to compromise and cooperated with the French, the uprising of Ton That Thuyet and patriot King Ham Nghi was the most highlight at that time in which the patriotic movement effected by feudal ideology. French resistant movement for independence which was initiated by the militant faction under Ham Nghi’s flag was known as Can Vuong movement lasted more than 10 years (1885-1896). In the early phase of the movement, Ton That Thuyet, King Ham Nghi with his entourage chose Quang Binh as the final stop to host the long-term struggle. Since then, there had been many resistant movements to French in the upper Gianh river happened in order to help Ham Nghi King protecting the country. The article focuses on the contributions of Quang Binh people in the Can Vuong movement in the late nineteenth century.
