OLD VIETNAMSES WORDS IN DICTIONNATIUM A MAMINTICO-LATIUM OF JL TABERD

Abstract

The paper is about “Dictionarium Anamitico - Latinum" compiled by Bishop J.L.Taberd in 1770s. It is one of the earliest lexicons of Vietnamese script in which many old words had disappeared in our current Vietnamese language. We can not recognize, understand and use them now. But this lexicon had taken notes and remarked the past image of culture in the old literary works or in the old dictionaries of Western and Vietnamese bishops and clergies in the early history of our script. The study result is focused on the old word system in this lexicon, compared with current Vietnamese words and given some viewpoints in order to help linguistic students to know deeply their mother tongue.
