Abstract

Biomass which includes lignin and cellulose from rice straw is the largest renewable source for the production of bio-products. Cellulose and lignin were easily isolated with high the yield under conditions of NaOH 2 M at 90 oC for 2 h. The extraction yields of lignin and cellulose were 85,9% and 96,2%, respectively. The surface tension of lignin was 43.7 mN/m, lower than that of water. The size of cellulose fibers was average about 5 m as evidenced by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observation. The weight loss start temperature of cellulose and lignin showed 260 oC and 190 oC, respectively. Cellulose and lignin are potential materials for various environmental applications.
