ASSESSING THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SHRIMP FARMING IN KIM HAI COMMUNE, KIM SON DISTRICT, NINH BINH PROVINCE

Abstract

This study assessed the impacts of climate change on shrimp farming in Kim Hai commune, Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province using sociological survey methods. By evaluating four factors of climate change (changes in temperature, precipitation, storms’ frequency and sea level rise), the results showed that the majority of the population in Kim Hai commune perceived the impacts of climate change on shrimp farming is apparent. In particular, the two aspects of temperature increase and sea level rise have the greatest impacts on the aquaculture species. The change in precipitation has the greatest impact on socio-economic conditions. The change in the frequency of storms has the greatest impact on aquatic resources. The study also assessed the impact of climate change on shrimp farming under climate change scenarios in Ninh Binh using in-depth interviews with commune officials and agriculture extension staff in Kim Hai commune. The results showed that the impacts and risks of climate change for shrimp farming activities are high while the adaptive capacity is still low, leading to high vulnerability for shrimp farming.
