Abstract

Due to various factors such as the influence of Vietnamese (source language), Chinese (target language), and the teaching process, Vietnamese students often make numerous grammatical errors in their Chinese oral communication. This article conducts a survey of 208 oral proficiency tests of Chinese majored students, based on which the frequency and proportion of different types of grammatical errors in Chinese made by the students are analyzed. Based on the survey results, the article identifies subjective and objective factors contributing to these errors. Subjective factors stem from teachers, learners, and teaching content while objective factors are attributed to the Chinese and Vietnamese languages and the duration of study. Finally, the article provides several recommendations for teaching and learning Chinese grammar for Vietnamese students.
