A research of using the local material to reinforce the Buon Sa earth-dam

Abstract

      Many earth-dams that have been using for years have been crushed or being in the risk situationssuch as the body of the dam is deformed, cracked, sliding, or extreme infiltration. Therefore, it isnecessary to have a mean for consolidating the dam's body in order to achieve the safety of thedam, as well as the efficiency of using water of the reservoir. The paper presents the experimentalresults on the advantage of combining the cement-lime mixture with the local soil to improve thewater-resistant ability of the filling material. The result shows that the combination of 3% lime, 2%cement (in term of weight) with the local soil can reduce significantly the coefficient of permeabilityof the filling mixture. In addition, the authors used Geo Studio software to simulate the operation ofthe earth dam's body namely Buôn Sa, Đăk Lăc, which has been reinforced by applying theproposed filling material based on the local soil with the new filled-up layer is on the upstream sideand its thickness range, to analyze the shear stability and water-resistant after upgrading.
