Abstract

The paper presents the simulated results of wave-induced current in the nearshore areas and rip currents on a beach with submerged dunes. Simulated results were compared with physical experiment data. The comparision between the simulated results and physical experiment data of Haller et al. (1997) showed that the best method among the three methods provided with MIKE 21 in this study, was MIKE 21-HD-EMS. The results also show that it is necessary to use a strong mathematical model to simulate wave field, which is used to caculate the wave radiation stresses, for simulation of wave-induced currents including rip currents. Simulated results of the model using Boussinesq equation were the most suitable in all of methods used in this study and satisfactory agreement in comparison with the laboratory data given by Haller et al. (1997). The rip current results caculated by MIKE 21-FM HD-SW which is the most used before, have large discrepancies of current speed and range in comparison with experimental data.
