Abstract

The IMO strategy reduces ship emission to 2020 and zero in 2050 that requires the ship-owners and operators are looking for economic solutions to meet the new requirements for Sulphur concentration in emission. The majority of shipping fleets worldwide are using high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) as non-compliance fuel to the IMO 2020. There are several solutions to meet IMO 2020 which have been implemented in some countries such as installing exhaust treatment equipment, using fuels with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5%, using MGO or distillate fuel according to requirements of ISO 8217:2017, and use of non-sulphur fuel such as LNG, LH2, and NH3. In this article, the pros and cons of each option will be analyzed as well as proposing directions to develop optimal options. The research results help ship-owners, ship operators and policy-makers have an orientation to sustainable development for the maritime industry.
