Abstract

This study aims to show the difficulties in English pronunciation that English learners in Vietnam encounter. The study involved 33 second-degree students at Phan Thiet University, who were provided with dialogues to practice and record. Their pronunciation was then analyzed and compared with the standard Received Pronunciation (RP). The study reveals significant differences between the two pronunciation styles, identifying common errors in pronunciation, word stress, and sentence stress. The paper suggests that phonics teaching should be integrated into teaching students’ speaking skills. The paper also suggests strategies for teachers to help students overcome specific pronunciation challenges. This study provides valuable insights for English instructors and curriculum writers.
