Abstract

From the 1st to the 7th century, the Korean Peninsula witnessed a unique political landscape marked by the coexistence of three kingdoms: Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. These states implemented diverse foreign policies to enhance their power and achieve unification of the peninsula. A significant aspect of their strategies was establishing diplomatic relations with China, aimed both at territorial defense and gaining Chinese support in their power struggles on the Korean Peninsula. Employing historical methodology, logical analysis, and documentary research, this study elucidates the role of China in the Korean Peninsula's conflict and unification process from the 5th to the 7th century. Additionally, it sheds light on the diplomatic acumen and the consciousness of independence and sovereignty of these Korean kingdoms in their relations with China, particularly focusing on Silla. Consequently, the study draws conclusions about the role and significance of foreign relations in the survival and development of each state on the Korean Peninsula during the 5th to 7th centuries.
