Abstract

Academic freedom is a component of university autonomy. After the Higher Education Law added “Academic autonomy and professional activities” (2018), the issue of academic autonomy began to be a source of concern for teachers, with many disagreements. Understanding the intrinsic nature of academic freedom in higher education is of great significance to the construction and development of modern higher education in our country. This article analyzes academic freedom from the perspective of the university's historical development, using methods of historical research, collection, synthesis, and analysis of documentation. The research focuses on clarifying the conceptual nature of academic freedom in universities from a historical perspective, the role of scientific freedom in the development of the modern Vietnamese education system, and offering some ideas to ensure the right to academic liberty in the innovation of higher education in our country.
