Abstract

The urban heat island effect is making the climate in cities more extreme, increasing energy consumption and seriously affecting people's health. Green space development is considered a strategic solution to limit the negative impacts of the urban heat island effect. This study aims to evaluate the role of green space in reducing the negative impacts of heat island phenomenon in Hanoi city. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) extracted from Landsat satellite data for the years 2015 and 2020 of Hanoi city are used for analysis, comparison, and determining the relationship between green space density and surface temperature in Hanoi city. Research results showed that green space plays an important role in cooling in the summer period. At the same time, the surface temperature in the non-vegetated areas is always higher than that in the vegetated areas at high levels of 2 to 30C. The research results provide a significant reference that makes an important contribution to an effective and sustainable urban planning strategy.
