HUMAN ACTIVITIES AFFECTING THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE TRACHYPITHECUS FRANCOISI AND SOLUTIONS IN TUYEN QUANG PROVINCE

Abstract

From investigating 96 households in the territories of 3 communes of Khuon Ha, Thuong Lam (Lam Binh), and Sinh Long, 8 types of impacts from the locals to the habitat of Trachypithecus Francoisi were identified. The results of the study assessed impact intensity categorized from the lowest to the highest included: (1) wood exploitation and transportation; (2) Wildlife hunting; (3) Herding; (4) Firewood exploitation; (5) Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) exploitation; (6) Wildfire, hydroelectricity, and mineral mining; (7) Land misuse. The results of this research indicated that many solutions needed to be effectively carried out to protect the Trachypithecus Francoisi’s habitat. Particularly, those involved raising civil awareness, knowledge, and livelihoods. The improvement of local authorities and ranger units’ capability in forest management was also demonstrated crucial. Law enforcement was also required to control and handle forest crimes. The enactment of new policies endorsing local participation in forest development and biodiversity protection. The conversion of protection forests into reserve forests was also applicable. In addition, the locals were encouraged to cultivate woody plants for wood and firewood as well as to consider planting other NTFPs under the forest canopy.
