FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF LIVELIHOOD APPROACH OF PEOPLE IN DON DUONG DISTRICT, LAM DONG PROVINCE

Abstract

This article focuses on understanding the choice of livelihood approach of households in Don Duong district, Lam Dong province. The research methods used in this study are (1) qualitative to discover and identify research variables; and (2) quantitative to estimate, test the model, and present research data by Descriptive Statistics and Binary Logistic Regression. Research data were collected from direct interviews with 200 households in rural areas of Don Duong district by proportional stratified probability sampling method and processed by SPSS 22.0 software. Research results show that there are 4 factors affecting the choice of livelihood approaches. These factors affect the choice of purely agricultural or non-agricultural livelihood methods for households in Don Duong district, in order of importance, respectively: (1) occupation of the head of household, (2) Ethnicity, (3) Loan capital, and, (4) education level of the head of household. Based on the research outcome, the authors propose some suggestions to help local authorities have additional scientific bases in issuing appropriate policies to develop sustainable livelihoods for the people in the district.
