Abstract

This research was implemented with the aim of evaluating the acute toxicity and hepatoprotective effect of ethanol extract of stem bark of Oroxylum indicum (L.) Vent. The authors used the Litchfield – Wilcoxon’s method to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of ethanol extract of stem bark of Oroxylum indicum against carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) induced hepatotoxicity. Research results show that the LD50 of the ethanol extract of stem bark of Oroxylum indicum could not be determined. After 8 days for oral administration, ethanol extract of stem bark of Oroxylum indicum at doses of 300 mg/kg and 900 mg/kg showed a hepatoprotective effect by reducing AST, ALT and MDA levels, in addition, a dose of 900 mg/kg showed limited damage to the liver injury induced by CCl4 in a mice model. Through the study, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of stem bark of Oroxylum indicum is safe and exhibits hepatoprotective effects against CCl4.
