Abstract

This study deals with numerical investigation on hypersonic flow around a boattail of an axisymmetric body. The research models are axisymmetric boattail bodies with standard conical and square non-axisymmetric boattail shapes. Boattail geometrys with different lengths and angles were investigated. Authors used Reynolds averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) equations with turbulent model k- ω SST by ANSYS Fluent and conducted the experimental validation with a previous research. The flow and shock waves around the axisymmetric body were simulated visually. Numerical results show that boattail geometry strongly affected the drag of the model. The optimal angles were approximately 7° ÷ 9° for the conical boattail and closed to 9° for the square boattail. When the boattail length increased, the drag had a tendency to decrease at the boattail angle of 7°. The research results also show the ability to use the pressure distribution of a longer- length boattail to describe the pressure distribution of the shorter one.
