THE CURRENT SITUATION OF CHICKEN RAISING AND WASTE TREATMENT IN PHU BINH DISTRICT, THAI NGUYEN PROVINCE
Abstract
Chicken raising activities in Phu Binh district (Thai Nguyen province) have been continuously developing in recent years, inducing concerns about environmental pollution. This study was conducted in Phu Binh during October 2020 to evaluate the current situation of local chicken raising activities and waste treatment. The research was carried out through personal interviews with 90 households in Tan Khanh and Ban Dat communes. As a result, scale of chicken raising of the households is small with about 1,900 chicken heads/household. Breeding facilities are mainly located in residential areas. The majority of households have applied different methods to treat chicken waste. Nonetheless, the current treatment efficiency is rather limited, causing environmental pollution and adverse impacts on human health. 40.7% of the producers have been trained on how to handle livestock environment. However, proportion of farmers’ learning through neighbors accounts for 32.1%, while the rates of the producers’ learning through production groups, cooperatives and demonstration models are very small. Results of this research would be a useful basis for relevant agencies and farmers to take appropriate action to protect the rural environment and the health of local households and animals.
