Abstract

This retrospective study was conducted to analyze the appropriateness of initial antibiotic selection and antibiotic use for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in the Department of Internal Medicine of Tue Tinh Hospital from January to December in 2018. Research results and conclusions showed that 8/58 (13.8%) patients with gastroduodenitis, 12/67 (17.9%) patients with respiratory and ENT infections were treated with inappropriate antibiotic regimens as compared with current recommendations. Only 1/33 (3.0%) patients were treated with Metronidazole at a lower dose than recommended level. In terms of conventional antibiotics, the rate of those who were treated with appropriate antibiotic doses for respiratory diseases is rather high. However, the percentage of low-dose Metronidazole and Gentamicin use in patients surveyed was 100%. While 1/1 (100%) patient was treated with high-dose Doxycyclin, high-dose Cefuroxime was used for 1 out of 14 ones surveyed (7.1%). Most dosing frequencies are appropriate with the recommendation, but only some antibiotics having inappropriate dosing frequency are Cefuroxime with 4/18 patients (22.4%) and Cefotaxime with 2/23 patients (8.7%). Especially, 100% antibiotics surveyed were used with the suitable administration route recommended.
