THE PROPHYLACTIC EFFECTS AGAINST DIABETES OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT FROM MESONA CHINENSIS BENTH. IN HIGH-FAT DIET-FED MICE
Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder, mainly caused by insulin resistance, which often occurs in elderly, obese and inactive people. This study aimed to assess the preventive effect of diabetes of Mesona chiensis Benth. on white mice (Mus musculus) fed a high-fat diet. Subjects were divided into 2 groups and fed for 4 weeks: a control group (a high-fat diet and 0.9% NaCl) and case group (a high-fat diet and a high dose of M. chinensis extract). The results showed that after 4 weeks, the blood glucose concentration in the case group decreased from 8.78 to 7.2 mmol/L (P < 0.0001), which was significantly lower than that in the control group. At the same time, high doses of M. chinensis extract also increased glucose tolerance in the cases at 0, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes. Thus, the extract of M. chinensis has prophylactic effect against diabetes in white mice with the high-fat diet. This is the basis for further studies in the use of M. chinesis extract to prevent diabetes in humans.
