The cross - cultural identification, French - Vietnamese architecture, case of french colonial constructions in Hue

Abstract

Hue city is a unique national heritage city of Vietnam. Especially, Hue citadel used to be the capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), recognized by Unesco as a world cultural heritage in 1993. During the French colonial period (1875-1945), Hue was the capital of Trung Ky (Annam). The French have built here a large number of architectural works with many different styles, in which special attention is paid to works designed with the combined FrenchVietnamese style. Through the study and survey of the current status of French colonial architecture in Hue, the article will identify the architectural interference between these two different cultures, find out what causes and motives that have influenced the architecture of Hue for this type of hybrid architecture to be built.
