An innovative vibration-based method for monitoring scourring effect on bridge’s piers
Abstract
Localized scour around bridge foundations and piers is one of the main causes of bridge damage and may lead to bridge collapse if not detected early. The method of monitoring the variation of the vibration-based structure has received numerous interests thanks to its ability to monitor frequently at low cost and with relatively good reliability. In this research, a numerical model is developed to forecast the scour level by evaluating the correlation between the variations in foundation stiffness and variations in natural frequency. The numerical model shows a considerable agreement between the prediction results and the experimental observations. From these preliminary studies, an approach for continuous scour monitoring by analyzing the vibration characteristics of the bridge has been proposed and has potential for further development.
