Abstract

This study presents the lightweight mortar with recycled tyre rubber as aggregate and cenosphere. The surface of the rubber aggregate was treated by NaOH solution with a concentration of 20% for 30 minutes. The optimum mixture has a ratio of rubber aggregate to natural sand between 40:60 and 50:50 in volume, the amount of cenosphere replaced for cement volume in the range of 10-40%, the cement content of 450 kg/m3, and a ratio of water to the binder of 0.4. Consequently, the mortar could approach the dry density of 1300÷1500kg/m3 and the compressive strength of over 5 MPa at the age of 28 days. Moreover, the properties of mortar, such as density, compressive strength, bending strength, adhesive strength, and absorption, were influenced significantly by the amount of rubber aggregate and cenosphere, as well as the fineness modulus of the aggregate. However, they were not affected by active mineral admixture.
