Abstract

This paper presents investigation results of suitability of using sea sand for concrete production. The study has carried out quality assessment various sea sands including raw sea sands and washed (desalinated) sea sand sources from some sand processing facilities in Vietnam. Properties of the sea sand samples were evaluated through criteria of fine aggregate for concrete according to TCVN 7570:2006, in which focused on contaminated ingredients in the sea sands such as chlorine ions, sulphates, organic impurities. In addition, the processed sea sand samples were also assessed for the shell content, surface textures, petrographic compositions, alkali-aggregate reactivity, and soundness in manesium sulfate solution. The test results showed that sea sand with appropriate fineness modulus, after washed meet the technical requirements of sand used as fine aggregate for concrete.
