INCIDENCE OF PYOMETRA IN BITCHES AT THE VETERINARY CLINIC, DONG THAP COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Abstract
A study conducted at the Veterinary Clinic of Dong Thap Community College on 188 intact female dogs showed that the inciden ce of pyometra was 19.14% (36/188). Among the 36 clinical cases, open-cervix pyometra was the predominant presentation (86.1%), which was diagnosed early and managed effectively, whereas the closed-cervix type, despite its low prevalence, carried a high risk of mortality. The recorded risk factors included the use of reproductive hormones (44.44%), nulliparity (27.78%), age ≥ 7 years (16.67%), and mongrel breed (11.11%). Treatment outcomes revealed that ovariohysterectomy had a significantly higher efficacy (with a 95.83% success rate) compared to medical management (60%), particularly in cases with a closed cervix or those non-responsive to medication.
