The protection and promotion of human rights in the United Nations framework – Achievements and challenges

Abstract

Human right protection and promotion is considered as one of three pillars of the United Nations (UN) alongside with other two pillars which maintain international peace and security. Over 75 years, with continuous effort in reforming the UN’s system, building a legal solid foundation and monitoring implementation mechanisms of human rights, achievements in such area have proved its role of the largest global multilateral international organization over the year. However, besides these achievements, together with the socio – economic development, the task to protect and promote human rights of the United Nations has been facing many challenges. This article will first introduce the UN’s mechanism to protect and promote human rights. In the following sections, the article summarizes achievements in building a culture of human rights, legislating, and establishing agencies with functions to protect and promote human rights; analyzes the challenges that the UN is currently facing.
