Human rights among ASEAN countries - Perspectives from Vietnam after 25 years of membership

Abstract

Protecting and promoting human rights among ASEAN is a topic of current interest due to its  specific approach.. The paper analyzes influences of different factors such as “ASEAN methods”, “Asian values” on its approach to human rights issues. The paper also points out obligations of ASEAN members, including Vietnam as the basis to assesse the practice in Vietnam.It aims at offering recommendations towards compatibility in accordance with practice and Vietnam’s regional commitments, especially in the context of becoming United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC) Candidacy for the 2023-2025 tenure as ASEAN candidate.
