The Impact of Fishing Modernization on the Culture of Fishermen in Ngu Loc Commune, Hau Loc District, Thanh Hoa Province
Abstract
Modernization of fishing is taking place in most coastal communities in
Vietnam as well as in coastal fishermen in Ngu Loc commune, Hau Loc district, Thanh Hoa
province to meet the increasing demands of society. In Ngu Loc commune, this process has
helped improve modern fishing equipment and tools, reduce fishermen's labor, help them go
out to sea to fish and access new trading systems. However, modernization also affects the
cultural life of the fishing community here in many aspects such as changing the perception of
the world view, reducing community cohesion, and causing the loss of skills, traditional
knowledge and fishing methods. Therefore, it is necessary to organize many training sessions
to raise fishermen's awareness, publish a multifaceted handbook on fishing, and develop
cultural tourism to preserve and promote local culture.
