Cultural Transformation of the Bru Van Kieu People in the Border Area of Quang Binh Province

Abstract

This article is based on fieldwork data from Kim Thuy Commune, Le Thuy
District, and Truong Son Commune, Quang Ninh District, Quang Binh Province, in 2023
and 2024. It discusses the current status of the Bru-Van Kieu’s material and spiritual
cultural transformation, identifying factors affecting this ethnic group’s cultural
transformation. The research results show that the most dramatic changes have occurred in
tangible cultural elements, clearly demonstrated in cuisine, costumes, and housing. The
Bru-Van Kieu people’s cultural transformation is influenced by many factors, including
migration, the market economy, and cultural integration, which have led them to change
their perspectives and become more open to accepting new cultural values.
