Abstract

Introduced to Vietnam via sea routes in ancient times, Buddhism swiftly intertwined with the nation's beliefs and culture, becoming ingrained in the spiritual lives of its people. Amidst the evolving social landscape of coastal regions, Buddhism remains intricately connected to the socio-economic and cultural fabric of local residents. This article explores the role of Buddhism in the lives of the Kinh, Cham, Khmer, and Hoa communities in various coastal areas. Within the collective consciousness of coastal dwellers, Buddha symbolises protection and fosters peace while bestowing blessings for abundant harvests. Expressions of people's wishes and gratitude are conveyed through religious rituals. Through communal endeavours, Buddhism exemplifies the essence of compassion and goodness, fostering a sense of solidarity between the “spiritual” and the “material” realms. The fusion of Buddhism with ethnic cultures also serves to preserve distinct cultural characteristics, guiding individuals towards a more fulfilling existence.
