Virtual Space and Real-life: The Impact of Social Media on the Lives of Ha Nhi Women in the Vietnam-China Border Area
Abstract
The study explores the changes in psychology, lifestyle, behaviour, and relationship between Ha Nhi women with their families and communities under the influence of virtual social networks in the Vietnam-China border area. The research results show that – besides opportunities such as self-affirmation and relief of life pressures, the enhancement of cultural exchange, the maintenance and expansion of social networks, the development of ecommerce, and the improvement of livelihoods – the participation of women in border areas in virtual social networks also poses specific challenges and influences on ethics, customs, traditions, and the inherent connection between them and their families and communities. The study provides a scientific basis for the development of policies and solutions to promote positivity, minimise undesirable impacts, and improve the “resistance” of each woman and family when entering the virtual social network environment. Therefore, the article also contributes to ensuring social order, national defence, and security in border areas.
