EQUILIBRIUM STRATEGY IN VIETNAM BY NIXON ADMINISTRATION FOR POST-PARIS AGREEMENT PERIOD (January-June, 1973)

  • Hồ Thanh Tâm

Abstract

Implemented during the period of January June 1973, equilibrium strategy has the content: The United States will (1) curb the DRV to conduct military attack activities, (2) aid weapons (within the framework of the Paris Agreement) and (3) economic aid to the RVN in order to achieve the goal: to create a military "quiet" period for the RVN to recover, focusing on building a strong potential; after that, it will persuade the DRV to abandon its intention to destroy RVN. This policy reflects the Nixon administration's efforts to maintain the existence of the RVN, which was defeated by opposition from Congress and the impact of the Watergate crisis.
