THE USE OF COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES IN TEACHING SPEAKING SKILLS FOR NON-ENGLISH MAJOR STUDENTS

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a research project which investigates teachers'
perceptions and practice of applying Communicative Activities (CAs) to teaching speaking
skills for Non-English Major Students at University of Foreign Languages, Hue University.
The participants of this study were 30 lecturers of the Department of English for Specific
Purposes. The analysis of qualitative and quantitative data collected from surveys and
interviews indicates that most of the teachers have a good understanding of CAs knowledge
and positive perceptions towards the roles of CAs in teaching speaking skills. It also reveals
popular CAs, advantages and disadvantages of the practical application of CAs. Some
suggestions for teaching speaking skills were thus offered to help teachers utilize CAs in
their teaching more effectively.
