USING EXTENSIVE LISTENING TO IMPROVE LISTENING COMPREHESION SKILL FOR NON - ENGLISH MAJOR STUDENTS

Abstract

Of four language skills, listening comprehension has been perceived as the most difficult skill for non-English major students in universities and colleges today. This is partly due to short class-time and big-size classes in universities, listening comprehension skill has not been improved effectively during the learning process. The researcher takes the advantages of the Internet and a wide range of available audio-visual resources to introduce extensive listening activity for first-year students in Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City Campus. The instruments utilized in the study included listening tests, questionnaire and observation. The study result suggests that it is very effective for students to watch video clips outside the classroom to improve their listening skills and extensive listening exerts positive outcome for a majority of students.
