Sử nước ta tuy chép nhiều chi tiết về việc Nguyễn Ánh cầu viện quân Xiêm nhưng gần như hoàn toàn không đề cập gì đến tương quan giữa hai nước Xiêm-Việt trong thế dựa vào nhau, có khi chung một mục tiêu nhưng có lúc tranh chấp quyền lợi. Tương quan giữa hai bên không thể giải thích một cách minh bạch nếu chúng ta không đặt trong quan niệm chung về vương triều và tổ chức nhà nước của vùng Đông Nam Á. Tuy nhiên, vì đã quen với những khuôn mẫu nhất định ảnh hưởng từ Trung Hoa, việc thừa nhận những mối liên hệ đó hầu như không mấy ai đặt ra, hoặc chỉ lên án hành động cầu viện của Nguyễn Ánh là “rước voi về giày mả tổ”.

Biên khảo này nhấn mạnh vào tương quan khu vực và người viết cố gắng giải thích lại một số biến cố khi đối chiếu với lịch sử của Thái Lan, Ai Lao, Cao Miên... để chúng ta có thể hiểu được sử Việt Nam một cách rộng rãi hơn.

ABSTRACT

Though our history noted down numerous facts about Nguyễn Ánh’s petitions for help from Siamese army, it almost never mentions the relationship between the two nations connected to each other by destiny, at a time sharing the same objectives and at some other time opposing each other for national interest. The mutual relationship between the two sides cannot be defined clearly should we not regard it in the background of a common conception of a monarchy and the state mechanism of the nations in South East Asia. However, since we are so well accustomed to the norms imported from China, the need to recognize those relations is never taken into consideration or we just condemn Nguyễn Ánh’s petition for help from Siam as “rước voi về giày mã tổ” [to bring grist to the enemy’s mill].

This study put an emphasis on the regional relations and the author try to review some Vietnamese historical events while comparing them to the histories of Thailand, Laos and Campuchia in order that we can obtain a wider view of the Vietnamese history.
