Một vị thuốc bị hiểu sai/A misinterpreted medicine

Trong cuốn sách Những cây thuốc và vị thuốc Việt Nam, tác giả Đỗ Tất Lợi đã nhầm lẫn giữa loài “chuột nhím” (tên chữ Hán là thích vị, tên khoa học Erinacus europaeus hoặc Erinacus dauricus) với loài nhím Hystrix hodgsoni (tên chữ Hán là hào trư). Đây là hai loài thú khác nhau xa. Thích vị thì nhỏ bé, chỉ có lông gai ngắn, ăn sâu bọ, sống ở xứ lạnh. Còn nhím Hystrix hodgsoni là loài thú gặm nhấm lớn, ăn rễ cây và thực vật, sống ở xứ nóng, và đây mới là con nhím ở nước ta.

Sự nhầm lẫn từ chuột nhím sang nhím đã dẫn đến việc hiểu sai vị thuốc thích vị bì, tức da chuột nhím, thành dạ dày nhím và ngộ nhận về tác dụng y dược của hai loài thú này. Da chuột nhím dùng để chữa một số bệnh về đường ruột, còn dạ dày nhím (hào trư đỗ) lại không có tác dụng chủ trị các bệnh về dạ dày.

Đáng tiếc là sự ngộ nhận này vẫn còn rất phổ biến trên nhiều sách báo ở nước ta.

ABSTRACT 

 In the book Những cây thuốc và vị thuốc Việt Nam (The Vietnamese Medicinal Herbs and Prescriptions), the author, Đỗ Tất Lợi, mistakes the animal called “chuột nhím” (Erinaceus dauricus or Erinaceus europaeus) for the kind of porcupine with the scientific name Hytrix hodgsoni. These are 2 different kinds of animals. “Chuột nhím” is small with short and hard pointed hair. It lives on insecticides and in a cold habitant... “Nhím” Hystrix hodgsoni is a big kind of rodent living on roots and vegetation in a hot tropical habitat and it is the right kind of nhím  in Vietnam.

This mistaking leads to a misinterpretation of the medicine “thích vị bì”, skin of Chuột nhím, as made of the stomach of the other animal Nhím, and consequently leading to a wrong definition of the medical properties of these two kinds of animal. In fact the chuột nhím’s skin is used for some intestinal illnesses, while the porcupine’s stomach is not capable of any treatments for intestines.

It is quite regretable that the above misleading definition is still popular in many newspaper and documents published in Vietnam.
