Huyền thoại trận mù u/The Legend of "Mù u" Battle

Trong cuốn Cố đô Huế, tác giả Thái Văn Kiểm kể rằng, dưới thời Tự Đức, quân Pháp đổ bộ vào cửa Thuận An rồi kéo binh vào Kinh Thành Huế. Quân triều đình mai phục ở đường Xã Tắc, dùng kế đổ trái mù u đầy đường khiến quân Pháp trượt ngã rồi xông ra tập kích khiến quân Pháp chạy tán loạn. Người Huế truyền tụng câu chuyện này và gọi là trận giặc mù u. Nhưng sự thật lịch sử thì không phải như vậy.

Căn cứ vào sử liệu, nhất là cuốn Lô Giang tiểu sử của Tiểu Cao Nguyễn Văn Mại, tác giả bài viết cho biết trận mù u xảy ra trong biến cố thất thủ kinh đô Huế ngày 23 tháng 5 năm Ất Dậu (5/7/1885), nhưng người gánh chịu hậu quả lại chính là quân và dân Việt, khi phải tháo chạy hỗn loạn trước sức phản kích của quân Pháp. Không có một chiến thắng vinh quang nào gắn với trái mù u như dân gian đã truyền tụng.

ABSTRACT

In the book “The Former Capital of Hue”, the author, Thái Văn Kiểm, says that in the time of King Tự Đức’s reign, the French navy landed at Thuận An estuary and from here sent its force to the Emperial Citadel in Huế.The royal army planned an ambush at Xã Tắc street, scattering the fruit of the tree “mù u” [These fruits are hard and round, roughly as big as a toe] all over the place. This made the French troops slip, giving the Vietnamese an opportunity to launch a surprising attack,routing the enemy.The Hue people often relate this story and refer to this as the “Mù u” battle. However, it is not a true story.

Historical documents, above all the book “A History of Lô Giang” by Tiểu Cao Nguyễn Văn Mại, reveals that the above battle took place in the downfall of the Emperial Citadel on 23 May of the Year of the Rooster (5/7/1885), and the victims of the plan were the Vietnamese troops themselves after they were routed by the French counter attack. Indeed, there was no victory for the Vietnamese forces in connection with the “mù u” fruit.
