Dựa trên các cứ liệu thành văn có thể khảo sát được, tác giả phân chia quá trình nghiên cứu Nam Hải chư đảo của học giới Trung Quốc từ năm 1909 đến năm 2005 thành hai giai đoạn: giai đoạn đầu từ 1909 đến 1947 là giai đoạn sơ thám; giai đoạn sau từ 1948 đến 2005 là giai đoạn bột phát và định hình. Giai đoạn sơ thám biểu lộ rõ hai động thái ứng phó cho một chọn lựa địa danh ở vùng biển Nam Hải của chính phủ Trung Hoa Dân quốc:
Một là, phương án công bố năm 1935, không sử dụng địa danh thuần Hán, tức chấp nhận sự mất liên lạc với lịch sử của địa danh để chiếm lĩnh hệ tọa độ địa lý. Động thái này cho thấy đây là thời điểm bắt đầu thực hiện ý đồ chiếm lĩnh (nếu được) vùng biển mà Trung Quốc chưa từng làm chủ.
Hai là, phương án công bố năm 1947, Hán hóa một số địa danh khi đã mường tượng được một chiến lược ngụy biện dùng sử liệu làm căn cứ để áp đặt chủ quyền.
ABSTRACT
On the basis of available documents, the author divides the process of Chinese scholars’ study regarding the islands in the South China Sea from 1909 to 2005 into 2 stages: The first stage just of preliminary survey from 1909-1947 and the second stage from 1948-2005 with booming activities and established planning. The stage of preliminary survey represents two measures taken by the Taiwanese government for the geographical names in the South China Sea: One is the project declared in 1935 which decided against using pure Chinese names; That is, to sacrifice Chinese historical links to the names in exchange for the ownership claim to the area. This decision represents the early steps of a scheme to occupy (if possible) the sea that China had never owned. The second measure is the project declared in 1947 to change a number of the names into Chinese after the Chinese government was somehow sure of a position to unilaterally claim their sovereignty over the South China Sea by means of sophism based on historical documents.
